Escape from shark attack
If Tim Franklin hadn’t made a miraculous escape from the jaws of a white pointer shark in South Australia in 1971, he might never have found his way to Tasmania.
Just 15 years old, Tim was surfing at Southport in South Australia when the predator sank its teeth into his thigh. A friend dragged him ashore and applied a tourniquet to his leg before he was rushed to hospital.
Tim still bears the scars from the ordeal, which resulted in 262 stitches and the loss of one-third of the muscle in his leg.
The story of the attack made front-page news in the local newpaper, The Advertiser.
